Abstract

Aim:

To discuss the development and validation of a structured intervention for improving neurocognitive functioning and well-being of traumatic brain-injured (TBI) patients

Materials and Methods

Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were followed to develop and validate the module. The first phase of the development of the intervention module was the framing of the intervention module after conducting semi-structured interviews with experts working with BI patients. Eight experts including a Clinical psychologist, psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, and others were chosen for interview through convenient sampling. Validated interview guides were used for the process. The framed intervention module was given to Three field experts for content validation. The experts rated the intervention's usefulness on a scale of 0-4 (4 extremely helpful).

Results

The themes derived in the interviews were the importance of rapport and trust building, self-awareness, self-regulation of emotions, and the need for acknowledgment. The interviews were consolidated to frame the intervention module consisting of sixteen sessions having two parts in each session. Part one of each session is activities for improving cognitive functioning and the second part is guided instructions for Mindfulness strategies. Sessions were finalized with ratings and suggestions from the experts. The final version of the module was pilot-tested and was found to have enhanced neurocognitive functioning and well-being of TBI patients

Conclusion

Integration of evidence-based techniques brought in novel perspectives in intervention.
