Abstract

Background: Research on the role of spiritual experiences has been conducted on a wide range of health related topics, across many disciplines and in many countries. Spiritual belief has a strong association with increased self esteem (Papazisis, 2014). Aim: of the present study was to investigate the role of spiritual experiences in perception of self esteem and fear of negative evaluation among adults in India.

Method: Online survey was conducted using Google Form via Facebook, Whats app and Emails with offline assistance of expert.  Total number of 327 individuals participated in the survey.   The Google Form was comprised of instructions to participation, Self Esteem scale, Fear of Negative evaluation scale and questions related to the daily spiritual experiences along with consent form. Obtained response were analysed with the help of student t test.

Result: Mean of self esteem and fear of negative evaluation was found to be high for atheist in comparison to believer in the GOD. This seems to be quite surprising that both theist and atheist had insignificant relationship in terms of self esteem and fear of negative evaluation. Participant’s mean for self esteem was found to be high for those who do not offer prayer at all when compared with those who offer prayer once in a day. Self esteem was high irrespective of the prayer offered and high self esteem may not necessarily depend on spiritual experiences among participants.

Conclusion: Self esteem and fear of negative evaluation may be high in case of atheist population. Fear of negative evaluation might not be influenced through prayers. Self esteem may be increased even without offering any prayers.
