Background: Social Media Addiction and Fear of Missing out are areas of immense interest in recent studies. These factors can influence the social competence of adolescents.
Aims: The aim of the present study is to study the relationship among social media addiction, fear of missing out and social competence and analyse the variables that predict social competence in adolescents.
Method: The sample comprised 100 adolescents studying in various secondary and higher secondary schools of Kolkata, between the ages of 13 and 17 years. In the study, the participants completed the questionnaires of Smartphone Addiction Scale – Short Version, Internet Addiction Test, Fear of Missing Out Scale and Adolescent Multidimensional Social Competence Questionnaire. Participants were screened using the Smartphone addiction Scale – Short Version as a screening tool. In the analysis of data, regression was used.
Results: According to independent samples t-test, there is significant difference in social competence among the groups of social media addiction, although no significant difference between the groups of fear of missing out. According to multiple linear regression analysis, social media addiction (ß= -.730) and fear of missing out (ß= .171) predict social competence of adolescents. When social media addiction and fear of missing out increase, social competence of adolescents decreases.
