Abstract

Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adolescents has been recognized as a distinct phenotype, with a lifetime prevalence of 2-3% globally. Adolescents’ perceptions of authoritarian parenting styles have been associated with greater anxiety symptoms. Levels of anxiety sensitivity and distress tolerance have been associated with symptoms of OCD. Interestingly, distress tolerance has no longer found to be a significant predictor of OCD when levels of anxiety sensitivity have been controlled. Objective: The study aimed to examine the role of anxiety sensitivity as a mediator between perceived parenting styles and distress tolerance. Method: Using a single-group cross-sectional research design, data from 218 adolescents (104 males and 114 females) aged 12-17 years with clinically significant symptoms of OCD, recruited through purposive sampling, were collected using standardized self-report measures including the Perceived Parenting Styles Scale (PPSS), the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3) and the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS). Results: Mediation analysis revealed that anxiety sensitivity partially (20.03%) mediates the relationship between authoritative perceived parenting style and distress tolerance. Conclusions: Since the levels of anxiety sensitivity partially mediated the relationship between authoritative perceived parenting style and distress tolerance of adolescents with OCD, this study has implications towards the development of anxiety sensitivity education and reduction programs, improving treatment outcomes for OCD amongst adolescents.
