Abstract

Objectives:

Suicide may be influenced by cognitive and protective elements, including a person's ability to regulate emotions and resilience in the face of stressors. Previous research has looked at these specific elements in establishing and maintaining suicidal ideation, but only in adolescents (Singh & Singh, 2022) and mostly in western, educated, industrialised, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) settings. This study examined how facets of emotional dysregulation naming non-acceptance of emotional responses, difficulties engaging in goal-directed behaviours; difficulties controlling impulsive behaviours; lack of emotional awareness; limited access to emotion regulation strategies and lack of emotional clarity and resilience predict suicide ideation in young adults.

Method:

A sample of 150 (Males = 69) young individuals (age = 25.11, SD = 2.39) from 18 districts of Punjab completed the questionnaires. Step-wise multiple regression was performed to evaluate if the above-mentioned six facets of emotional dysregulation and resilience would be able to predict suicidal ideation.

Results

The multiple regression analyses result showed that out of six facets, non-acceptance of emotions, lack of emotional awareness and resilience predicted suicidal ideation among young adults of Punjab. The findings suggest that interventions for young adults who are suicidal should focus on building up their emotional regulation and resilience skills.
