Abstract

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to find out the effectiveness of mindfulness based cognitive therapy in enhancing the posttraumatic growth of breast cancer patients in Kerala. Of the eighty participants who fulfilled the inclusion criteria, sixty four (64) obtained a general well-being score <10, and four participants dropped from the study. Method- Using a 2 x3 mixed model repeated measures design, sixty participants (PGI score<10)   matched in terms of age, duration of illness, stage of cancer, and general well-being were randomly assigned to the experimental (N=30) and control (N=30) groups. The Experimental group were given mindfulness based cognitive therapy, whereas the control group did not undergo any intervention and continued with their existing treatment. The pre, post, and follow up assessments of both experimental and control groups on post traumatic growth were rated using a standardized instrument. Results-Data analyses using Repeated measures MANOVA (Multivariate Analyses of Variance) indicated a significant improvement in the posttraumatic growth of the experimental group, but not the control group. Conclusion- Mindfulness based cognitive therapy was effective in enhancing posttraumatic growth among breast cancer patients.
