Abstract

Background: The worst disease of the twenty-first century is AIDS. Mental health professionals are currently looking for some psychosocial approaches for these patients to use alongside pharmacological treatment for AIDS patients to lessen their distress from the disease. Objective: The current study intends to examine the effects of AIDS patients’ membership in self-help groups on their psychological distress and quality of life. Participants: 137 AIDS patients participated in the investigation (71 affiliated with a self-help group and 66 hospitalized). The sample’s age ranges from 22 to 57 years. Measuring Tools: The sample was assessed with WHO Quality of Life-Bref and General Health Questionnaire-12. Data Analyses: Data were subjected to T-test and Discriminant Functional Analysis. Findings: The study revealed that AIDS patients who are a part of a self-help group have a better life quality and suffer less psychological discomfort than hospitalized patients. The findings of the discriminant analysis showed that both groups showed discrimination in one domain (physical health) of quality of life.
